If she gets a PDF sent to her she can open it, preview it in the inboxes window, save it and then open it, but when she tries to open the PDF from a webpage it will not open, it tries to search for the appropriate program on the web to use to open the file. We have also tried to look at other PDF's stored on her hard drive, they open fine too.
Problem
When using Internet Explorer to open a PDF document you receieve the following error:
Adobe Acrobat does not support Internet Explorer’s Enhanced Protection Mode (EPM). Either install the latest version of Adobe Reader or disable EPM in Internet Explorer.
Solution
This issue is generally caused when an older version of Adobe Acrobat (the PDF creating software) is installed.
Because the version of Adobe Acrobat is older, it does not support the EPM security feature in Internet Explorer 10 and later.
Solution 1 – update Adobe Acrobat
- To re-enable Acrobat or Reader for this website, delete the browsing history in Internet Explorer. The next time you click a link to a PDF on the same website, Run control Don’t run options are again presented on the website. Click Run to view PDFs in Internet Explorer 10 or Internet Explorer 11 with Enhanced Protected Mode enabled.
- Method 4: Change File Explorer Options. Changing the File Explorer’s “Open File Explorer To:” option has helped solve the issue for a lot of users. The problems seems to appear if this option isn’t set to “This PC” option. Follow the steps given below to change this setting. Press and Hold Windows key and press R.
Update the version of Adobe Acrobat.
If it is a moderately modern version of Acrobat the update will hopefully include support for Internet Explorer’s EPM security feature.
Solution 2 – disable opening PDF files in the browser
This solution involves changing the Adobe Acrobat settings so that the PDF files do not open in the browser window.
Depending on your browser the PDFs made automatically open in their own window or the download option may appear.
- Open Adobe Acrobat
- Click on the ‘Edit’ menu then ‘Preferences’
- Click on ‘Internet’ on the side bar
- Under ‘Web Browser Options’ untick ‘Display PDF in browser’
- Click ‘OK’ to save the changes.

Solution 3 – use Adobe Reader as your default PDF software
The solution to to make sure the latest version of Adobe Reader is installed and then set Adobe Reader to be the default program for PDF files. This way when you open PDF files from Internet Explorer, the latest version of Adobe Reader will handle the file – which supports the EPM security feature.
To set Adobe Reader as the default program you will need administrator rights on the computer. The steps below show how to do this:
- Open Adobe Reader
- Click on the ‘Edit’ menu then ‘Preferences’
- Click on ‘General’ on the side bar
- Click on the button ‘Select Default PDF Handler’.
- Click on the drop down box and select ‘Adobe Reader …’
- Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ to exit out the dialogs
- PDF files will now open in Internet Explorer, using Adobe Reader.
If a blank page opens when you click a link to a PDF in Internet Explorer 10 or Internet Explorer 11, you may have disabled Acrobat or Reader for this website.
Microsoft introduced Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM) in Internet Explorer 10 and included it in Internet Explorer 11. EPM is enabled by default in Internet Explorer 11. When EPM is enabled, you may see the following message when you click a link to a PDF:
'This web page wants to run ‘Adobe PDF Reader’ which isn’t compatible with Internet Explorer’s enhanced security features. If you trust this site, you can disable Enhanced Protected Mode for this site and allow the control to run.'
Explorer Not Opening Pdf Files
“Don’t run” disables Acrobat or Reader for this website (domain). Acrobat/Reader is disabled for all PDFs on the site. After you click Don’t Run, a blank page displays whenever you click a link to a PDF on the website.
